Traditional Virginia Stonemasonry
Shelton Sprouse specializes in building authentic recreations of historic stonework. He was the recipient of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) award for his work at Thomas Jefferson’s “Monticello” and “Poplar Forest,” as well as his stonework at James Monroe’s “Ash Lawn.” He has completed work on the Grounds of the University of Virginia, including the Victory Garden at the residence of UVA’s president, built in collaboration with the noted architect, Mead Palmer.
Today, with his partner John Apperson, Shelton continues to do creative contemporary stone work. Shelton’s residential clients include the best-selling author, John Grisham, and the newspaper publisher T.M. Worrell. He completed an extensive four-yearlong work for Stefan Lessard, the bassist for the Dave Matthews Band. Shelton has a 40-year history of exceptional stonework and continues to be available for new projects, repair of historic stonework, and as a source for handpicked stone.
